A Masterpiece of a Day: Our Excursion to the Van Gogh Exhibition!
Today, our students stepped out of the classroom and into the vibrant world of art history with a visit to the Ueno Museum to see the stunning Van Gogh exhibition. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to see original masterpieces up close and witness the exact artistic techniques we have been studying in class.
Our journey through the gallery followed Van Gogh’s incredible transformation as an artist. We began with his early days in the Netherlands, looking at sketches and paintings on canvas and paper that depicted working-class people. The students noticed how he used a deliberate palette of dull, dark colors to capture the hardships and dire living conditions of laborers.
The mood shifted beautifully as we moved into his French period. The paintings he created after moving to France were far more colorful, grand, and lively, featuring the vibrant colors that brought the bustling nightlife of 1880s Paris to life. A major highlight was getting a close-up look at his famous masterpiece, Café Terrace at Night, which perfectly showcased his renowned, thick impasto technique. The students even loved playing art detective, successfully spotting his signature, "Vincent," on a few of the pieces!
From Van Gogh’s moody early sketches to his vibrant, thick brushstrokes, today’s visit was an absolute masterpiece of learning!
